Roscoe’s with Aaron & Laurie

Roscoe's with Aaron & Laurie
Aaron and Laurie were about as gracious as hosts can be when we dropped in on them in Oahu.  We wanted to take them to something uniquely Los Angeles.  Aaron insisted on one of his favorites — Roscoe’s —  which is a Los Angeles institution born out of Harlem.  Laura thought the “sauce” (i.e. syrup) paired well with the chicken and actually pondered dessert.  We added on...

Blues in G

Blues in G
Gretchen has the tooth brush’n, people aren’t shav’n, she’s not pounding blues and the Lil’ Man feels it.  Read More →

Marc’s Very Special Christmas

Marc's Very Special Christmas
We don’t observe Christmas, but Marc made it tough this year not to, at least, celebrate it — what with Christmas Eve dinner at the Hotel Del Coronado followed by a deliciously catered Christmas Day lunch at Judy and Janet’s.  Read More →

Shabbat SoCal Style

Shabbat SoCal Style
Why wouldn’t you want to end your week here? Maybe it is the Mossianic saga that draws us to pretty large bodies of clearly inseparable, and to be quite honest, chilly water. No matter. Our latent expectations of a miracle in the Pacific Ocean, specifically the coastline around the Palisades, is manifesting itself in a nice spot for a Shabbat dinner among old friends. And, honestly now, if you...

Lil’ Man and Sahana Go On a Date

Lil' Man and Sahana Go On a Date
Lucky and Sarmela came over this evening to help chaperone date night.  As shown above, things started to border on the bawdy but were, by good chance, cut short by Leon’s bedtime.  Incidentally, the chaperones were able to keep up a pretense of distraction while chowing down a Moroccan dinner of Tagine of Chicken with Preserved Lemons and Olives, Israeli cous cous with a fiery Harissa...

Beer, Burgers and Beverly Buddies

Beer, Burgers and Beverly Buddies
Memories fade and so it is important to make some new ones every twenty-four years or so.  Appropriately, then, Adam, Marlo and I organized a Class of ’88 “Beverly” Party today at Adam’s Hermosa Beach home.  The party could only be described as rad — owing in no small part, for sure, to an oversupply of burgers, a fair amount of booze, some blaring Whitesnake and 300 pounds...

Grilling a Summer Subcontinental: Chicken Curry Skewers, Mango Chutney and Preserved Limes

Grilling a Summer Subcontinental: Chicken Curry Skewers, Mango Chutney and Preserved Limes
Sunday morning: Naheed was in town for a wedding and had a last minute opportunity to sprint “off campus” for a few hours. The Sunders were available and so we filled up the kiddie pool for Sahana and the Lil’ Man.  What better Sunday than an impromptu barbeque and pool party? Naheed and her cousin came across a local farmer’s market and brought a staff of bread large enough...

Lucy and Leon Have a Dinner Date

Lucy and Leon Have a Dinner Date
Leon invited Lucy to dinner tonight for a romantic, al fresco, summer evening dinner date. Lucy is a lady, so both mommy’s had to chaperone. On the menu was organic “O” cereal and mashed vegetables.  Leon paired this with a wonderful rhone blend from Thomas Alexander. Maybe it was the wine, who knows, but apparently he got a quarter of the way to first base (which, in baby terms,...

Misfeldt Beach Week 2011

Misfeldt Beach Week 2011
You know summer is waning when the Misfeldt’s roll down from the Bay  to host a spectacular feast for dozens of the Filipino and Pakistani uncles, aunties and cousins—and, of course, us! The week starts off with the traditional lunch stop at our house, which hopefully beats anything along I-5. This year we prepared an asian-inspired barbecue. The boys got a chance to meet the Lil’ Man,...
